A set of civilian transport crates in 1:35 scale. It is neither a vehicle kit nor a military accessory in the narrower sense, but diorama material with which a scene is filled out. According to the name it holds 8 pieces. Unlike crates for ammunition these are ordinary crates of the kind used in warehouses, at railroad stations, at shops and on the beds of trucks.
Civilian crates are one of the most versatile elements in a diorama. They fill the empty bed of a truck, stand in the corner of a wrecked workshop, line up on a station platform, or lie scattered around a vehicle somebody is just unloading. They work well as a way of breaking up the height of a scene too, because the eye needs something of middling height between the flat ground and a large model. And since they are tied to no one army and no one period, they will serve just as well in a scene from the end of the war as in a civilian view with no soldiers in it.
Wood is best built up from a light base: thin glazes of brown and gray tones laid one on another in turn give the grain a depth that full coverage will never give. Let the individual crates differ in shade so that the set does not look all of a piece. Knocked-about edges and gray weathered wood in the upper part look natural, and so does suggested lettering, which does not have to be legible down to the detail. Scattered straw, a rope or a plank propped against a wall will round the scene out without much work.
