About product

What kind of accessory this is

A house ruin intended for a diorama in 1:35 scale. The qualifier in the name refers to the Ardennes, the region on the borders of Belgium, Luxembourg and France, so the ruin lends itself to scenes from Western Europe. A collapsed building gives a scene a background and at the same time sets its scale: from the height of the doors and the windows a viewer estimates at once the size of the figures and of the vehicle standing in front of it.

How to set the ruin into a scene

A ruin tends to work better as a frame for the action than as its main subject. It pays to place it at the back or side edge of the base so that a clear view of what matters remains and so that at least one strong shadow is created. Do not leave the junction with the terrain sharp, or the building looks as if it were merely lying on the base; scattered rubble, lumps of mortar and mud dragged into the threshold suit the foot of the masonry. A broken-out corner or an exposed beam will benefit the scene, as long as it stays legible what of the building is still standing.

Building and painting tips

Cut the excess material and the traces of manufacture off with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the surface. Before painting, wash the surface, degrease it and go over it with a primer. Masonry and plaster both come out best worked from dark to light: a darker base coat, then a dry brush in a lighter tone over the edges once it has dried, and a thin wash into the joints and the corners. Distinguish the exposed bricks from the plastered areas with a different shade. Add dust, fallen mortar and the traces of running water with pigments at the end, more generously at the ground than higher up.

Who it is for

For builders of dioramas and vignettes in 1:35 scale who want to set a scene among buildings. Figures, vehicles, the base, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A house ruin for building dioramas in 1:35 scale. The dimensions, the number of parts and the material are given by the manufacturer. Figures, vehicles, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.

Best at the back or side edge of the base, so that a clear view of the action remains and a strong shadow is created. Work the junction with the terrain in with rubble and mud, so that the building does not look as if it were merely standing on the base.

Work from dark to light. Over a darker base coat apply a lighter tone with a dry brush once it has dried, deepen the joints and the corners with a thin wash and add dust with pigments.

Yes, the scale corresponds to the usual 1:35 figures and vehicles. The height of the openings and of the masonry helps a viewer estimate the size of the figures in the scene.
