This set from ICM is not a model of a vehicle or an aircraft but an injection-molded plastic accessory for building dioramas. It represents a section of American M8A1 steel airfield matting, from which temporary runways and hardstandings for equipment were laid. The assembled panel measures roughly 33 x 21 cm and makes a realistic ground under models of vehicles, aircraft or figures.
M8A1 steel matting was developed by the engineer units of the US Army for quickly putting up temporary airfields and hardstandings. The panels, with pressings and holes for drainage, were laid on the ground and joined into a continuous surface. They were used widely above all in Southeast Asia for basing helicopters and light aircraft.
Glue the parts with thin plastic cement and sand the joints between panels for a smooth transition. The base is a steel gray to dark metallic shade, which you bring to life with weathering, rubbed edges, rust and above all mud and dust effects using washes and pigments to suit the setting you choose.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
