A shovel, an axe, a crowbar, a tow cable or a fire extinguisher belonged on the hull of a German tank just as much as a matter of course as the armament did. Without them the crew would not have recovered a bogged vehicle. They were held in small pressed clamps which were either drawn tight with a wing nut or snapped shut on a spring. The early machines had finer clamps, more carefully made; later the shape was simplified for the sake of the speed of production. For a modeler it is a rewarding detail: it is inconspicuous, yet on a finished hull it is recognized at once, because out of the box it tends to be molded in one piece and without shape.
Before you start cutting, photograph or sketch the layout of the tools on the hull so that you know where the new clamps belong. Remove the molded clamps with a scalpel and level the surface with a fine file. It proves itself to glue with a minimum of glue carried on the tip of a wire, so that the tiny part is not flooded. Do the painting together with the hull in one shade, finish the tools separately, and bring the edges out with a dry brush at the end. What stands out best is the contrast of a light wooden handle against the dark metal of a clamp.
