The real subject

The Yamaha VMAX is a textbook example of the so-called power cruiser: a long, low machine built around a V4 engine whose strength is meant to show at first glance. The striking covers along the sides of the tank, the massive rear tire and the short tail give the motorcycle a silhouette that cannot be mistaken for anything else. The finish under the Black 2 designation builds on dark paint, in which the shapes stand out through reflections rather than through color.

The model in 1:12 scale

The 1:12 scale is established for motorcycles and on a machine this large it means a model that takes up its share of a display case. It is worth it: on a motorcycle the engine, the exhausts, the frame and the suspension are all exposed and uncovered, so careful work on the small parts shows in the result more than on a car. It pays to prepare a stand or a base straight away, because the finished model stands on only two wheels and without support it tips over easily.

Building and painting tips

Black is the most demanding shade for surface preparation. Sand the base smooth, degrease it and lay the paint on in thin coats, otherwise even small irregularities and sanding marks will show. Gloss is helped by a final clear coat with polishing. Fit the gloss and light-colored parts only at the end, so that they do not get dirty. The particular procedure and the recommended shades are given in the manufacturer's instructions.
