An injection-molded plastic kit of the prehistoric flying reptile Pteranodon in 1:35 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Tamiya, from the Prehistoric World series. It is a figural model of an ancient creature with faithfully rendered anatomy: the beak, the pronounced crest on the head, the wrinkled skin and the network of blood vessels on the membranous wings are all modeled. The package includes a base representing a sea cliff and the surface of the water, and also a miniature human figure in 1:35 scale, which helps convey the real size of the animal.
The Pteranodon was a large flying reptile (a pterosaur) living in the Late Cretaceous. It did not belong to the dinosaurs in the narrow sense but to the pterosaurs, winged reptiles with membranous wings stretched between the body and an extremely elongated finger. A toothless beak and a long bony crest at the back of the skull were its characteristic features. With a wingspan of several meters the Pteranodon soared over prehistoric seas, where it hunted fish.
The model has few parts and goes together easily; clean the joints up after gluing, so that they do not stand out in the smooth skin. Paint the skin and the wings with an airbrush and then bring them to life with soft transitions and a fine wash that emphasizes the wrinkles and the vessels. The wing membranes look realistic with a slight lightening of the shade. Finish the base with the cliff using the colors of water and rock for a striking scene.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
