About product

1:35 Pz.Kpfw.VI Sd.Kfz.182 Tiger II, an early production vehicle — a Hobby Boss kit

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:35 scale from the manufacturer Hobby Boss. The real subject is the German Tiger II heavy tank with the service designation Sd.Kfz.182, and in the early production form with the turret referred to as the Porsche one. The model is tied to a particular vehicle whose chassis serial number is given in the name, so it is precisely the form of the turret and the production stage that set this item apart from other models of the same type.

The real subject

The Tiger II was a German heavy tank from the end of the Second World War with an 88 mm gun with a long barrel and with steeply sloped frontal armor. Vehicles of the early production batch carried a turret with a characteristic rounded front and a bulged side wall, for which the designation after the Porsche design proposal took hold; later vehicles received a turret with a flat front and straight sides. The vehicle's high weight loaded the power train and limited its mobility and range. The differences between the production stages also concern details of the hull, the exhausts and the running gear.

Building and painting tips

The running gear with interleaved road wheels is the most laborious part, so assemble and paint it before closing the hull sides up. Build the turret separately, so that you can comfortably paint the underside of the barrel and the roof. With vehicles from this period layered painting suits well: a base shade, patches sprayed on or laid on with a brush, a dark wash into the gaps and pigments at the end. Consider whether you will show the vehicle with the protective coating against magnetic mines, whose texture can be imitated with shaped filler, or without it.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of German armored equipment in 1:35 scale
  • Modelers who distinguish early and late production stages
  • Anyone interested in a particular vehicle with a documented serial number
  • More experienced builders who will manage a complicated running gear

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The early turret has a rounded front and bulged side walls, while the later form has a flat front and straight sides. This model captures the early form.

It refers to the particular vehicle the model is worked out from. It serves to distinguish it from other sets of the same type.

Check the contents of the package on the packaging of the kit.

Rather not. The running gear with interleaved road wheels is laborious and calls for careful fitting.
