A plastic kit in 1:350 scale from the Ukrainian maker Mikromir. The subject is project 685 Plavnik, in the NATO code the Mike class - the single unit built, the submarine K-278 Komsomolets. Beside the plastic the package contains decals and a fine photo-etched fret; check the extent on the box.
The word plavnik means fin in Russian. The boat had a double hull whose inner pressure part was of titanium, and she came about as a proving craft for the technology of the fourth generation of Soviet nuclear submarines; at the same time she was combat capable. She entered service on 28 December 1983 and on 4 August 1984 in the Norwegian Sea dived to 1020 meters - a depth no other combat submarine managed. She ended tragically: on 7 April 1989, on her third voyage, a fire broke out in one of the compartments after a short circuit, the reactor shut down and the submarine lost her propulsion. She surfaced, but after several hours she sank. Of sixty-nine people aboard, forty-two died.
Fill and sand the long joint of the hull halves smooth; on a teardrop shape every ripple shows. Bend the photo-etched parts on a metal base and glue them with cyanoacrylate glue, not with cement for plastic. Unify the hull with a primer coat; lighten the dark surface so that the model does not lose its outline in the display case.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
