1:350 Soviet submarine Project 628 is a plastic kit of the Soviet Project 628 missile submarine from the Ukrainian maker Mikromir. The project stayed on paper - the model thus shows a boat that was never built.
Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:350 scale, the Mikromir part number 350-030. It came about by extending an older mold of a K class submarine with a new set of parts carrying the missile superstructure. According to the manufacturer the package holds three sprues of plastic, a photo-etched fret and a small sheet of decals; the markings cover the units K-3 and K-21.
Project 628 was a design study from 1952 to 1953. It was to put a cruise missile from the Chelomey design bureau aboard the large diesel-electric submarine of the K class, XIV series, of around 1500 tons displacement. The hangar for the missile was built into the conning tower, the launch rail lay on the deck right behind the hangar and a lifting ram tilted the missile up to an angle before launch. The work got no further than the drawing board. The K class was approved in 1936 as a long-range submarine; of twelve units the K-21 has survived as a memorial.
It is a short-run mold and the build will remind you of it. The parts are not numbered on the sprues and the hull and the tower have no locating pins, so dry-fit every joint and mark the position of the tower before gluing. Sink marks at the forward part of the hull, at the propeller shaft and at the hangar doors have to be filled and sanded. Glue the photo-etched parts with cyanoacrylate glue. Then spray the hull with a primer coat - on a uniform gray surface every misaligned joint will show.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
