This item is not an aircraft model but a set of turned metal barrels. It replaces the plastic parts of the nose armament of an injection-molded kit in 1:48 scale. According to the name it is one cannon barrel of 20 mm caliber and four machine gun barrels of 12.7 mm caliber. The advantage of turned parts is a perfectly circular section and an open muzzle, which cannot be achieved on injection-molded plastic without drilling, and also far greater resistance to bending while a finished model is handled. Aber is a Polish manufacturer specializing in metal and photo-etched accessories.
The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was an American twin-engine fighter of twin-boom layout with a nacelle for the pilot between the engines. It was precisely that arrangement that made it possible to concentrate the whole armament in the nose of the nacelle instead of in the wings. The rounds therefore flew parallel and did not have to converge on a single point at a set distance, which increased the effective range and simplified aiming. The armament combined one automatic cannon with several heavy machine guns. The F and G versions belonged to the middle part of the production program and differed from one another mainly in engines and equipment.
First cut the plastic barrels off the model as close to the nose as possible and carefully drill out the holes left behind with a micro drill to the diameter of the shank of the metal barrel. Dry-fit the parts until they sit in one plane and are parallel to one another, because any misalignment shows at once on the nose of the P-38. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue, of which a minimum is enough. Degrease the metal with alcohol before painting and use a primer meant for metal, otherwise the paint will peel. To set the cannon apart from the machine guns it helps to work with a dark steel shade and a fine sooty cast at the muzzle.
This is an accessory for modelers, not a kit in its own right. The basic model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
