About product

de Havilland DH.88 Comet (1:48, Mikromir)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British racing aircraft de Havilland DH.88 Comet in 1:48 scale from Mikromir. It is a short-run kit, usually complemented by a photo-etched fret and decals for several racing machines. The model comes as plastic moldings; glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package.

The real subject

The de Havilland DH.88 Comet was a British twin-engine racing aircraft created specially for the long-distance air race from England to Australia in 1934. Its aerodynamically clean wooden airframe with a narrow fuselage, retractable landing gear and two inline engines was remarkably advanced for its time. The Comet named Grosvenor House won that famous race from London to Melbourne and the machine became an icon of the golden age of air racing. Its elegant lines and record performance still make it a sought-after subject for collectors.

Building and painting tips

On a short-run kit, patience pays off — dry-fit the parts first and sand and clean up the joints where needed. Paint and fit the cockpit before you close the slim fuselage; mask the glazing. Set the two engines and their cowlings accurately for the sake of symmetry; some editions allow an engine to be displayed uncovered. Use liquid cement on the plastic, prime the surfaces and spray with an airbrush. Build a striking racing scheme (the deep red Grosvenor House, for instance) on a smooth gloss base and finish the surface with a gloss coat.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of aviation history and of the golden age of racing aircraft
  • For those interested in the British interwar school of design
  • For lovers of elegant, non-combat aircraft in the display case
  • For more experienced modelers used to short-run kits

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
