About product

1:48 Mitsubishi F-2B - the ADTW test unit with the ASM-3 missile

An injection-molded plastic kit of the two-seat version of the Japanese Mitsubishi F-2 fighter-bomber in 1:48 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Hasegawa. The release captures a machine of the Japanese Air Development and Test Wing, known by the abbreviation ADTW, and the manufacturer adds the ASM-3 anti-ship missile and the short-range AAM-5 guided missile to it.

The real subject

The F-2 came out of Japanese-American cooperation based on the F-16 fighter, but it is not a copy of it: it was given a markedly larger wing with extensive use of composites, a different forward fuselage and Japanese avionics including its own radar. The main task of the aircraft is the defense of the islands against a threat from the sea, so anti-ship missiles are part of the plan for it. The F-2B version is two-seat and serves both for training and for combat duties. The ADTW test unit operates from Gifu air base and evaluates new equipment and armament; its machines are therefore often strikingly marked. The supersonic ASM-3 anti-ship missile with a ramjet engine belongs to exactly such trials.

Building and painting tips

Finish and paint the cockpit of the two-seat version before you glue the fuselage together, because there is a good view under the canopy glazing. Glue the glazing with a cement that does not fog the plastic and mask it before spraying. Apply the bluish Japanese maritime camouflage in thin coats over a smooth filler primer and keep the transitions soft. Paint the external stores and the pylons separately and attach them at the very end, so that they are not damaged in handling.

Who the model is for

  • Anyone interested in contemporary Japanese military aviation
  • Collectors of machines of test and development units
  • Modelers who appreciate external stores in the box
  • More advanced builders of 1:48 scale

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
