A set of figures of RAF bomber and torpedo unit aircrew, 1939 to 1945, in 1:48 scale from the Ukrainian brand ICM. An accessory for a finished model of an aircraft or for an airfield diorama.
Responsibility details are not available.
This figure set in 1:48 scale from the Ukrainian maker ICM shows airmen of the Royal Air Force from bomber and torpedo units of the 1939 to 1945 period. It is not a model of an aircraft but a stand-alone accessory that is added to a finished model, to a stand or to an airfield scene.
What a figure is good for beside a model of an aircraft
A model of a fighter or a bomber in a display case has no sense of scale until a human being stands beside it. A figure of an airman also gives away the era and the allegiance of the machine at once, because flying clothing differs more between air forces and periods than the aircraft themselves do.
The crews of British Bomber Command and of the torpedo units of Coastal Command were among the hardest-worked parts of the RAF during the Second World War. The torpedo squadrons flew twin-engine machines of the Bristol Beaufort type and later the Beaufighter, while the bomber units flew everything from twin-engine types to four-engine bombers. The flying clothing was similar in both groups: a flying suit or a leather jacket, a leather helmet with earphones, an oxygen mask, an inflatable Mae West life vest and a parachute harness. This combination is characteristic of the RAF and sets it apart from American as well as German equipment.
Injection-molded figures have a fine parting line round them that is best cut away and sanded before painting, or it will stand out once the paint goes on. Bond them with thin cement for plastic and fill the joints of the arms and head if need be.
Paint from a primer, so that the paint holds on the smooth plastic. The leather parts take brown tones with the edges picked out, and a flying suit reads best when the base tone is lightened on the raised areas and darkened in the folds. Do the face and hands last, in several thin coats. Matte varnish at the end.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The model of the aircraft, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
