An injection-molded plastic model of the Japanese interceptor Mitsubishi J2M3 Raiden, given the Allied code name Jack, in 1:72 scale from the Sword brand. It is a short-run kit that the manufacturer has supplemented with resin details, for example cockpit elements, and with painting masks. The box includes decals for several color schemes of Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service machines.
The J2M Raiden (thunderbolt) was a land-based interceptor designed for the Imperial Japanese Navy with the emphasis on fast climb and high speed rather than on the agility typical of the earlier A6M Zero. It was powered by a potent air-cooled Mitsubishi Kasei radial engine. The J2M3 version (Type 21) carried an armament of four 20 mm cannon in the wings and was deployed above all to defend Japanese airspace against Allied bomber raids.
This is a short-run kit that more experienced modelers will appreciate more. Glue the plastic parts with liquid plastic cement, fill and sand the seams where needed; dry-fitting the parts pays off with short-run kits. Wash the resin parts first to remove mold release residue, separate them carefully from the casting blocks and bond them with super glue (cyanoacrylate); protect your airways when sanding resin. Apply a primer before painting and lay the paints down with an airbrush in thin coats; the enclosed masks make spraying the canopy glazing easier.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
