About product

Photo-etched landing flaps for the Mitsubishi Ki-51 in 1:72 scale from Clear Prop Models

A detail set in etched sheet intended to refine the landing flaps on a model of the Japanese attack and reconnaissance aircraft. It is not a kit but an accessory. Etched sheet is an order of magnitude thinner than injection-molded plastic, so the flaps gain a believable trailing edge thickness and can be shown in the lowered position, as the machines often stood on the ground. The exact number of parts and the contents of the fret are given on the box of the set.

The real subject

The Mitsubishi Ki-51, to which the Allies assigned the reporting name Sonia, was a Japanese two-seat aircraft intended for direct support of ground forces and for tactical reconnaissance. It was powered by a radial engine, had fixed landing gear with spatted wheels and a low wing, which gave it good agility at low altitude. The design was deliberately simple and rugged, so that the machine could operate from improvised field strips. The type served from the early 1940s practically throughout the fighting in Asia, and at the end of the war it was used for tasks other than the original ones.

How the photo-etched parts are worked

Cut the parts from the fret with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, never by snapping them off, so that the sheet is not deformed. Make the bends over a straight edge, ideally in a photo-etch bending tool or at least between two razor blades. On the model the original plastic flaps have to be cut away and the seating sanded flat. They are bonded with super glue applied in the smallest possible amount; on larger surfaces a thicker gel version helps, because it gives time to align the part. Degrease the sheet before painting and use a primer intended for metal, otherwise the paint will chip during handling. The inner faces of the flaps usually differ in shade from the outer skin, which is a good opportunity for a restrained highlight of the detail.

Who the set is for

  • modelers who want to build the model with the flaps lowered
  • builders with experience of working with etched sheet and super glue
  • anyone interested in Japanese army equipment of the Second World War
  • competition modelers bothered by the excessive thickness of plastic flaps

This is a modeling accessory. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

Yes. The plastic flaps have to be cut away and the seating sanded flat, and only then are the photo-etched parts fitted.

Over a straight edge, ideally in a photo-etch bending tool. Without a firm edge you get a rounded transition instead of a sharp bend.

A primer intended for metal is recommended. On degreased sheet without a primer the paint chips easily during handling.

A Japanese two-seat machine for direct support of ground forces and reconnaissance, with a radial engine and fixed landing gear.
