About product

The British QF 6-pdr Mk.III L/43 gun and Besa machine gun tips - 1:72 (MASTER)

The set contains a turned metal gun barrel of the British QF 6-pdr gun of 57 mm in the Mk.III version with a barrel length of L/43, that is in the shorter form, supplemented by the tips of the Besa machine guns. It is not a vehicle model but an accessory with which the plastic parts of a basic kit are replaced. The metal gun barrel has a drilled bore and stays straight even once the model is finished, which with a long thin barrel in a small scale is the main problem of plastic castings.

The real subject

The Ordnance QF 6-pounder of 57 mm replaced the weaker two-pounder gun in British tanks. The version with a barrel 43 calibers long was the first tank form of the weapon and can be told from the later longer version precisely by the shorter barrel. It was carried by a number of British infantry and cruiser tanks of the middle phase of the Second World War. The Besa machine gun, mounted coaxially, was based on a Czechoslovak design built in Britain under license.

Fitting and painting tips

The length of the barrel is the distinguishing feature of this weapon, so first check which version your subject had; a mix-up of the short and the long barrel shows on a finished model. Cut the plastic part off and drill the hole for the pin slowly, so that the mantlet does not deform. Glue the metal with cyanoacrylate or epoxy. Degreasing and a primer meant for metal are needed before painting, otherwise the paint rubs off during fitting. The tip of the machine gun is a small part, so it is worth handling it with tweezers over a tray so that it does not get lost.

Who the set is for

  • builders of British tanks of the Second World War in 1:72
  • modelers who want to tell the short barrel version apart exactly
  • those who dislike the blind muzzle of a plastic barrel
  • builders of dioramas where the weapon is in the foreground

This is an accessory for modelers, not a stand-alone kit. The basic model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

In the length of the barrel. The L/43 is the shorter first tank version, the L/50 the later longer form. The difference is clearly visible on a model, so choose by the particular subject.

No, according to the designation these are the tips of the machine guns, that is the end sections of the barrels. The body of the weapon stays from the plastic kit.

It does not. The bore is part of the turned item. Only the hole in the turret mantlet for the pin of the barrel is drilled.

An ordinary modeling primer meant for metal surfaces will do. What matters is degreasing beforehand, otherwise the paint will not hold on smooth metal.
