An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:72 scale from the Ukrainian maker Mikromir, which concentrates on submarines and less usual aircraft. The subject is the KhAI-3, a tailless experimental transport aircraft from the Kharkiv Aviation Institute, known also under the designation Aviavnito-3.
The KhAI-3 was to prove that even an aircraft with an engine of somewhat over a hundred horsepower could lift a useful load. In the nose it carried a five-cylinder air-cooled Shvetsov M-11 radial engine and eleven passengers fitted into nacelles at the sides of the center section of the wing. The layout was tailless, with a broad center section and a vertical surface on the axis; the landing gear with a tailwheel did not retract. The machine flew on 14 September 1936. The first flights showed that controlled turns were difficult, and a long program of modifications followed. A single example was built and the proposed successor of 1937 never flew.
Dry-fit the parts first and cut the sprue gates off with side cutters rather than breaking them. A wing of large span deserves a braced glued joint and a check of the dihedral angle while the glue sets. Then unify the whole surface with a primer coat, which will reveal scratches from sanding. Decals will settle without silvering onto a smooth gloss surface.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
