About product

A Soviet military airfield of the nineteen-eighties in 1:72 scale from ICM

The themed kit in 1:72 scale from the Ukrainian manufacturer ICM rests on a different idea from an ordinary model of an aircraft. Its subject is not one machine but a scene: the equipment of a Soviet air base of the nineteen-eighties as it worked together on the ramp. The set is injection-molded from polystyrene and is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Check the particular make-up of the package on the packaging.

The real subject

In the nineteen-eighties a Soviet frontline airfield was an operationally self-contained whole. Besides the runway, it included revetments and hardened ramps, refueling and starting equipment on truck chassis, trolleys for carrying munitions and ground personnel. It is precisely this layer that gives an aviation model scale and meaning. An aircraft built on its own looks static, and only the ground support around it shows how a base worked and how many people and machines were needed for a single takeoff. For a modeler it is at the same time a rewarding period, because the armament and the ground equipment were settled at that time.

Building and painting tips

Build the set in groups and finish each one separately before you set it on a common base. ICM plastic is fairly soft, so a thin cement for polystyrene applied with a brush will do, but it pays to try the parts dry and to fill and sand the seams. Even the surface out with primer, spray the base shades with an airbrush and even the transitions between the equipment and the surface of the airfield out only with a final matte varnish. Create the operational look sparingly: a darker wash into the engraved lines, dust and mud with pigments from the lower areas upward, and oil stains only where they would really arise. Concrete areas work best when every panel gets a slightly different shade of gray.

Who the model is for

  • For modelers who build dioramas and scenes, not just models on their own
  • For anyone interested in Soviet aviation equipment and the operation of bases in the nineteen-eighties
  • For collectors of 1:72 scale who want to add a setting to their aircraft
  • For more advanced modelers who can manage work with several assemblies at once

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a themed set aimed at the scene of an air base, that is at an aircraft in the context of ground equipment and support. Check the exact make-up of the package on the packaging.

Yes. The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted, so you will need cement for polystyrene, paints and basic tools. A base and material for the terrain suit a scene as well.

Gluing the parts together is manageable, and what is more demanding is keeping a uniform look across several assemblies and matching the patina. More suitable for modelers who have already built a few models.

In 1:72 scale. You can therefore add your other aviation models in this scale without any trouble.
