This kit from Mikromir captures the Soviet Yakovlev Yak-11 trainer in 1:72 scale. It is a short-run injection-molded plastic model completed with a photo-etched sheet and a decal sheet. Short-run tooling brings fine surface detail, but the parts have heavier gate stubs and mating surfaces, so the build calls for more careful preparation than a mass-produced kit.
The Yak-11 was a two-seat trainer from the Yakovlev design bureau of the late 1940s, derived from the successful Yak-3 fighter. It was powered by a radial engine and the crew sat in a tandem cockpit with dual controls. It served for advanced and combat training of fighter pilots in a number of countries and was also built under license in Czechoslovakia, where it carried the designation Let C-11. It stayed in service from the late 1940s into the 1960s.
Dry-fit the parts first and sand the mating surfaces; with short-run tooling this tends to be the key. Use a thin plastic cement, and glue the photo-etched parts with cyanoacrylate. Finish and spray the cockpit interior before you close the fuselage, because it will be visible through the glazing. Mask the glazing before painting. An airbrush and polished metal shades suit the bare metal surfaces.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
