This is a book, not a kit. This title is volume number 23 of the flagship Airframe and Miniature series of the British publisher Valiant Wings Publishing. The volumes in the series are divided into a part on the airframe (development, variants, technical description, detail photographs and camouflage) and a modeling part (available kits, built models, surveys of accessories, masks and decals). The author is Richard A. Franks. The illustrations were prepared by Richard Caruana, Wojciech Sankowski and Jerry Boucher.
The Ju 88 came about as a fast bomber meant to escape fighters by speed instead of defensive armament. The V1 prototype flew in 1936. Its main combat guise became the A series, most numerously the A-4 version with a greater span and Junkers Jumo 211 engines: a crew of four in a shared cockpit, the characteristic gondola under the nose and dive brakes for a dive attack. The B series was given a completely new, glazed nose; only a few machines were built in series, but it was from this line that the later Ju 188 grew. The type proved so adaptable that a reconnaissance machine, a torpedo bomber and a night fighter all grew out of the bomber.
For modelers of the bomber Ju 88 from the prototypes to the A-17 and for builders of the rare B series. Watch out for the pair of volumes: the fighter, reconnaissance and late versions from the C to the T series are dealt with by a separate part 2, volume number 24.
