A photographic publication, volume 10 of the numbered Wingleader Photo Archive series from the British publisher Wingleader; the author is Neil Robinson. The part covers the early and night fighter versions of the Beaufighter in Europe and North Africa. The coastal Mk.VIC, Mk.X and Mk.XI from north-western Europe Wingleader issued as a separate volume 14 of the same series.
The Beaufighter came out of the torpedo-carrying Beaufort, and Bristol gave it four twenty-millimeter cannon in the nose and six machine guns in the wings, that is the heaviest salvo of any British aircraft of its day. The Mk.IF became the first truly successful night fighter of the RAF: it could carry a bulky radar with its typical arrowhead antennas, and its operator. For want of Hercules radials the Mk.II was given V12 Merlin XX engines, which worsened its behavior on the ground and changed the outline of the engine nacelles. The Mk.VIF had a more powerful Hercules and radar in a radome on the nose. Besides the night defense of Britain the type served over Malta and in the Western Desert.
For modelers who build a night fighter Beaufighter and need to check the antennas, the engines and the black night colors, and for anyone interested in the night defense of Britain. It is a book, that is picture reference for any scale.
