A publication, not a kit. Volume No. 99 of the Warpaint series, by the author Tony Buttler, follows the Demon from the first proposals through its engine troubles to its service with the carrier squadrons.
The McDonnell F3H Demon was an American carrier-based fighter with a sharply swept wing, designed around the Westinghouse J40 engine. That engine was a failure and nearly buried the program; it was saved only by the installation of the Allison J71. The Demon was McDonnell's first carrier machine with Sparrow guided missiles, and its design school led straight to the twin-engined Phantom II. It left service as early as 1964.
For modelers of early carrier-based jets who are working out the differences between the versions and their armament, and for readers with an interest in naval aviation of the 1950s. As a source it serves for choosing camouflage and markings and for checking the details that differ between individual versions. It can be read on its own, without previous knowledge of the real subject, and it also works as a general survey of the type.
