Volume 4 of the numbered Wingleader Photo Archive series from the British publisher Wingleader. The second of three parts on the Bf 109 E units in the Battle of Britain, devoted to JG 27, JG 51 and JG 52. The first part belongs to JG 2, JG 3 and JG 26, the third to JG 53, JG 54, JG 77, LG 2 and EprGr 210. The distinguishing mark is therefore the particular Jagdgeschwader, not the period or the version of the aircraft.
All three wings made their name elsewhere as well: JG 27 in North Africa, JG 51 on the Eastern Front and JG 52 as the most successful fighter wing of the war. In 1940, however, their Emils were flying over the English Channel and they carry the markings of a transitional period. Groups and squadrons were told apart by the color of the number, the outlining and the symbols behind the fuselage cross, and each wing adapted the system in its own way, so the same version of the aircraft looks different with every unit. Some of the machines had already been modified as E-7s with the ability to carry a drop tank, which was meant to deal with the chronically short range of the type.
For modelers of the Bf 109 E who want to build the machine of a particular unit and need picture support for it, and for anyone interested in the Luftwaffe of 1940. It is not a kit and not a technical monograph; the photographs and profiles can be used in any scale.
