A publication, not a kit. Volume 54 of the aviation series from the British publisher Warpaint Books, by Alan W. Hall, is devoted to the Westland Whirlwind F.Mk.I fighter. The text is in English and the softcover format is close to A4.
The Whirlwind was a British twin-engine single-seat fighter and the first RAF aircraft with four 20 mm Hispano cannons grouped in the nose. Such armament was exceptionally heavy at the beginning of the Second World War and the aircraft was fast, mainly at low altitude. What broke it was the powerplant: the Rolls-Royce Peregrine engines never received further development, because the manufacturer concentrated its capacity on the Merlin, and without more powerful engines the type lost its prospects. Only a little over a hundred aircraft were built and they reached two RAF squadrons, which later used them as fighter-bombers against targets over the Channel and over the French coast.
For modelers who build this rare type in 1:72 or 1:48 scale and need evidence for the camouflage and markings of the two squadrons that used it, and for anyone interested in less well known British designs. The extent of the volume is not stated here; the page count differs between the individual titles in the series.
