Acrylic Bases - Oval Pill 100x175 mm (Legion)

Acrylic Bases - Oval Pill 100x175 mm (Legion)

An oval acrylic gaming base measuring 100x175 mm. It is a piece of gaming equipment, not a decorative plinth under a finished model. An oval footprint behaves differently on the board from a circular one, and it is worth knowing why before you fix a model to the base.

Oval versus circle

A circle is the same from every side, so the facing of a model plays no part. With the 100x175 mm oval the difference between the longer and the shorter axis is seven and a half centimeters, and on a gaming board that is a lot: depending on the facing the model either closes off a lane or passes through it, and the measured distance to a target changes according to whether it faces the target front on or side on. Anyone playing a system that deals with the direction of sight or with a front arc works with the orientation of the oval constantly. The Legion designation in the name marks out the size range the base belongs to; check the specific rules in your own system.

Working with an oval

• Orient the model so that the longer axis matches its natural direction of movement.
• Measure distance from the nearest point of the edge, not from the center of the base.
• When deploying, allow for a turned oval taking up a different width of corridor.
• The same orientation across a whole unit makes measuring clearer for an opponent too.

Who it is for

For players of tabletop battles with large models that need a big oval footprint, and for collectors standardizing a collection on one type of base. The acrylic material and the size are given by the name; further details of the build are stated by the manufacturer on the packaging.
