Cutthroat Red holds the position most modelers picture under the word red: with no orange heat and no wine darkening. In the range it sits between the fiery tone and pink, so it is the link that heraldry, a cloak, a banner, a uniform facing or the painted sheet metal of a racing car rests on.
Red pigment is among the worst covering of all, and that is exactly why it pays to plan the procedure. Over a dark base the paint darkens and looks dirty, over a light gray or flesh base it brightens and needs fewer layers. The ideal is to lay two thin covering layers and only then to deal with shadow and light, because overpainting with a thick layer leaves stroke marks.
The dropper neck is more practical here than it seems. The shade is often mixed with white into pink transitions or with brown into dried blood, and measuring drops precisely is the only way to repeat the same ratio a week later. A closed bottle meanwhile lets no air in, so the rest of a mixed tone keeps. Worth noting too is that once dry the paint does not form a film that would peel off edges, so handling a finished figure does it no harm.
