Marine Blue is the classic dark blue of the kind that appeared for two centuries on naval uniforms and on the equipment of coastal units. It is neither a blue-black depth nor a bright sky, but the tone between them, which has enough depth to look dignified and enough color not to merge with the other dark areas on a figure.
Besides uniforms the shade finds use on the hulls of vessels above the waterline, on the blue parts of aircraft camouflage, on work clothing and on denim, which only needs a little white added and washed out into lighter stripes. In scale modeling it is a usable base for the transport liveries of buses and trucks.
Blue uniform surfaces let the technique of edge brightening come out beautifully. The procedure is straightforward: lay the base with this tone, mix a little light gray or beige into it and draw out only the edges of the collar, the shoulders and the folds. The resulting contrast looks natural, because on real cloth these are exactly the places that wear fastest and lose saturation. If you want to go further, add a hint of worn threads on the places of greatest wear with a thin line of an almost white tone.
