Yellow tends to be the worst-covering paint in a modeling cabinet at all. VALKYRIE YELLOW is mixed against exactly that: it carries a high proportion of pigment, so it reaches full strength before the detail is lost under it. It suits gaming figures, markings and numbers, the warning stripes of machines, the tarpaulins of racing vehicles and fantastic elements that are to draw the eye.
Even so the old rule applies: a yellow does well with a light surface underneath. Over white or light gray it comes out in one to two coats; over black it would need several coats and would lose its purity. Anyone painting onto a dark base lays a sand intermediate tone first and the yellow itself only onto that.
Shading a yellow is delicate work. Adding gray kills it quickly and black turns it into an olive, which is why a shadow is created rather with an orange and a weak brown, which keep the temperature of the tone. The light, by contrast, is pulled out with a drop of bone white, never with pure white, otherwise the area pales into chalk.
With warning stripes the cleanness of the edge is more important than saturation. It pays to use masking tape with low tack, to go over the transition with the color of the surface underneath first, so that it seals the edge, and only then to apply the yellow, which thanks to that does not seep under the tape.
