An aid for diorama work from the Spanish label Green Stuff World. It is a rigid acrylic mold into which pliable modeling putty is pressed to take an impression of a paved area. The Trihex Paver subject matches interlocking paving with a hexagonal division that makes up a continuous surface with no gaps. It is not a finished part and not a decal: you make the surface yourself, repeatedly and over as large an area as you need.
A hexagonal pattern is striking and regular, so it gives a scene order and a surface that is interesting at a glance. In reality you meet it on sidewalks, squares, platforms and in sites where durability was the priority. In a diorama it is rewarding above all because it photographs well: the regular net of joints shows the scale of the whole scene clearly and serves as a calm surface under figures and vehicles.
Roll the putty out into an even slab and press it into the mold with one even push over the whole area at once. Lightly dampen the surface of the mold before taking the impression, or treat it with a release agent, so that the putty does not stick. Once it has hardened, take the impression out and trim it to the shape you need. A dark shade then runs well into the joints between the pavers, brings out the structure and deepens the area visually.
