A universal dark acrylic wash in a 15 ml bottle with a dropper cap, drying matte. It is modeling chemistry, not a kit — it is applied to a finished painted model, flows into recesses and engraved lines, darkens them and pulls out detail that would otherwise disappear in a uniform color. Of the whole range this is the default variant: if you do not know which wash to start with, start with this one.
Unlike enamel washes it is water-thinnable: it is thinned and the excess wiped off with water, or with acrylic thinner — not with mineral spirits. The wash therefore has no odor, has low toxicity and can be used quite comfortably at a desk in a living room. It dries faster than an enamel.
There are two catches. Once dry, an acrylic wash wipes off less easily than an enamel one — deal with the excess while it is damp. And never apply it over an acrylic coat that has not cured: the water in the wash would lift and smear the fresh paint. The right procedure is to let the base color cure, coat it with gloss varnish, let the varnish dry — and only then wash. On a smooth gloss surface the wash also flows better and wipes off with no streaks.
The rule reads: the wash is chosen according to the base color of the model, not at random. A dark wash on a light surface looks dirty and coarse, a light wash on a dark one disappears. Dark Wash is a universal dark wash for mid and lighter base colors — khaki, olive, sand, mid gray and lighter camouflage, where you need general emphasis of detail and shadow with no pronounced color shift. If you want a warmer, earthier effect, reach for the dark brown wash; for gray vehicles and light surfaces where the tone must not shift, for the neutral gray one; for dark modern aircraft, for the deep gray one.
