An airbrush stencil measuring 90 x 60 mm with a wood texture. You lay it on the surface, spray paint through its cut-outs, and after removing it a pattern stays on the model that hand painting would keep regular only with difficulty. The density of the pattern is chosen for 1:32 and 1:35 scales, so the grain comes out in proportion to the part, not to the hand that paints it.
Everywhere wood is meant to be visible on a model: crates and boxes, plank floors, vehicle beds, fences, footbridges and the walls of dioramas. It is precisely on a small area that the grain decides whether the viewer sees a plank or a uniformly painted board. The stencil can be used repeatedly, so you can go through a whole scene with it and keep a consistent character of wood in it.
First spray the base tone of the wood and let it dry thoroughly. Then lay the stencil on the surface and press it down, so that no gap stays between it and the surface; the more closely it sits, the sharper the pattern that results. Spray perpendicularly, from a short distance, at low pressure and in thin coats, otherwise the paint will creep under the edge and the outline will blur. Then take the stencil off and clean it before the paint dries in the cut-outs.
