The barbarian treatment moves the figure from plate gear toward natural and coarse materials: fur, leather, textiles, bare skin. For a painter that means less shine and more texture, because instead of polished edges the work is with the structure of the surface. The particular treatment of the casting is not stated here.
Wash the casting in lukewarm water with dish soap and let it dry. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw leaving a margin and sand the area back; on textured surfaces such as fur, sand only where it is necessary, or you will flatten the texture. Take the seams off with a scalpel carefully and in a guided stroke. Glue with super glue and fill the gaps with putty. After the primer, fur is quickest done with a dark base, a dark wash into the grooves and then two or three passes of a dry brush in ever lighter tones; the brush has to be really dried off on paper, or a blotch will appear instead of suggested hairs. Keep the leather and the textiles in warm earthy tones so that the figure looks natural, and bring the shine back only on the straps and the metal fittings. Even the whole out with a matte varnish.
