Apply it in thin coats and let them mature thoroughly. Only on a matured coat should you go on to the further steps of finishing: evening out the sheen, decals or picking out recesses. Decals are laid on a smooth, glossy base; on a flat or grainy one a white veil appears under them. Pick out recesses and edges only at the end, when nothing more changes underneath.
Stir the contents before use, as the pigment settles at the bottom. Take out only as much as you will use, and mix it outside the original package. Use the thinner intended for this range, and you will find the thinning ratio in the manufacturer's instructions on the packaging. Work in a well-ventilated area, wash the brushes straight after work and close the package with the rim wiped.
A finished model benefits from being sealed with a protective top coat, which evens out the sheen and protects the decals and the picked-out recesses from wear. It is applied in light coats and only on a thoroughly matured coat, otherwise the coat underneath may wrinkle.
