Of the three sheets in this range, this is the only one that differs not only in thickness but also in surface. A hundred and fifty micrometers, that is fifteen hundredths of a millimeter, is the middle road between the pliable one tenth and the stiff two tenths: the sheet can still be shaped by hand, but no longer ripples at the first touch. The crucial difference, though, is the color: the surface is black, which changes the whole way of working.
Bare aluminum is light and shiny. Wherever it is cut, wherever paint is rubbed off or a coat does not sit, a silver area shows through and draws the eye. A black sheet removes this problem: a scuff reveals dark metal, not a bright mirror, and any uncovered spot blends into the shadow. Where the final color is dark, it can moreover be worked entirely without painting, as the finished part already has the color it needs. It therefore suits antennas, tie-down straps, covers, shades, thin strips and everywhere parts of a piece are visible from both sides.
The sheet is cut with scissors or scored with a scalpel and snapped over an edge; both work at this thickness. Count on a cut and a bend exposing the light metal under the surface; if that is a problem, the edges can be gone over with a black alcohol marker or with paint. Degrease the surface with alcohol before painting; even black aluminum is smooth and paint holds badly without a metal primer. It is bonded with super glue or with epoxy. The material also serves well as a masking template for the airbrush, because it is stiff enough to hold its shape at the edge and can still be bent over a rounded surface.
The material is intended for further work. The cut edges are sharp, so work with protection for your hands and eyes.
