An abrasive file with a flexible core and abrasive on both sides holds a flat plane even when the modeler presses down hard on it. A working width of nineteen millimeters rests on a large area at once, so it leaves behind none of the ripples that arise when sanding with a piece of abrasive wrapped around a finger. The grit corresponds to a combination of 100 and 180, which is the most aggressive grade in the manufacturer's whole range.
The gray body works as a color key to the coarseness. Gray means 100 and 180, blue the medium grade of 120 and 240, white the finishing 240 and 320. Anyone with several pieces laid out side by side on the bench recognizes the right one at a glance and does not have to read the printing.
Working with such a coarse grain is the first step, never the last. On plastic it leaves a matte, grooved surface that is evened out with the white piece of the same range or with fine paper under water. Without that the marks show through even under a gloss coat. On thin strips, vacform canopies and photo-etched parts this grit is too aggressive.
The sanding stick can be rinsed with water and left to dry in the open, which washes the clogged dust out of the abrasive and the file cuts again. The package contains one piece.
