A narrow sanding stick 3 mm wide with a fine abrasive of 240 and 320 grit. The white color of the body marks the fine grade in a color-coded set.

A sanding stick is a thin flexible tongue covered with abrasive, here only three millimeters wide. It is exactly that width that decides: it reaches between the cylinders of a radial engine, into a cockpit between the instrument panel and the side, to a wing root or between the wheels of the landing gear, where ordinary abrasive paper on a block will not fit.
The grits of 240 and 320 on the two sides place the piece among the fine grades. That means no coarse work is done with it: its turn comes after a coarser grade has leveled a seam or some putty, and its task is to erase the scratches left by the previous step so that the surface will take a primer without visible grooves. The color of the body works as a key, each grade of grit having a different one in the set.
The best results come from wet sanding: soak the piece, wipe off the excess and rinse the abrasive face from time to time. The water carries away the plastic dust that would otherwise clog the grit, and the surface stays smoother afterwards.
Press lightly. The flexible body is meant to bend to the shape of the part, not to grind it away by force, otherwise edges that are meant to stay sharp get rounded off. After work, let the sanding stick dry freely and do not store it bent, so that it does not keep the shape. Once the grit has worn smooth, it will still serve for polishing before painting.
It also serves well on materials other than plastic. It will deburr a resin casting, level the edge of a photo-etched part after it has been cut from the fret or square off the end of a brass tube. With resin and metal, however, always sand wet and with extraction, because their dust should not be inhaled.
