A finished scenery part that joins two things at once: a rock outcrop of limestone and the vegetation that grows through it. The S designation sets the smaller size of the rocks, and the early summer version the rich green coloring before summer drying. Nothing is built and nothing sprinkled; the piece is simply placed and glued onto the terrain.
Rocks with vegetation growing through them are a very effective element in a diorama, because they break up the monotony of a grassy area and give the scene its scale. They come into their own on field margins and the edges of fields, at the foot of a slope, on the bank of a stream, in the cutting of a track and anywhere it is meant to be apparent that the soil is shallow and stony. The smaller size of rocks also works well where pronounced boulders would read as too dominant.
Lay the growth only onto finished, painted and dusted terrain. Try the intended spot dry first, tear or cut the piece to an irregular shape as needed, since a sharp straight edge does not arise in nature. It is glued with PVA wood glue, and a drop of cyanoacrylate will serve for a firm hold on a hard substrate. Hide the transition between the growth and the surrounding soil with a sprinkled fine scatter, grit or pigment, so that the growth does not look like a glued-on carpet. You can match the coloring with a light overspray of heavily thinned paint from above or by dusting with pigment, always only very lightly and once dry. Never set the rocks in a regular row: in nature they collect irregularly and sink partly into the soil. You will support the way they join the terrain by sprinkling fine grit around the foot of a rock and dusting it lightly with pigment.
