Convair B-36 Peacemaker by Kev Darling is a monograph on the giant American strategic bomber of the early Cold War.
Responsibility details are not available.
In this volume Kev Darling deals with the largest bomber ever to enter front-line service. The item on offer is a publication about the aircraft, not a set of parts.
The B-36 came out of a requirement for a machine able to strike targets in Europe from home bases if Britain fell. The result was an aircraft with a span of around seventy meters, powered by six radial engines mounted unconventionally behind the trailing edge of the wing with pusher propellers. Later forms additionally got a pair of pods with jet engines under each wing, so the crews spoke of six turning and four burning. Besides the bomber versions a sizeable line of machines for strategic reconnaissance was built as well. The aircraft never saw combat and with the arrival of jet types it went into reserve at the end of the 1950s.
The title is rewarding for builders in the large scales, where the differences between the individual forms of pods and turrets come out. It will also interest anyone concerned with the technology and the strategy of the first years of the Cold War. It serves equally as a clear introduction to the history of long-range bomber aviation.
