The sheet is rolled from white polystyrene and carries a regular net of grooves that turns the surface into paving with an edge of 12.7 millimeters. The groove is 1.1 millimeters wide, so the joint stays readable even after a coat of paint and after a pigment or earth powder is rubbed in. A thickness of one millimeter is the compromise that allows cutting with a knife and snapping along the groove, and still lets the sheet hold its shape without backing.
In 1:35 scale the edge corresponds to roughly a forty-five centimeter tile, and in 1:72 scale it works out at a one-meter slab. It therefore suits courtyards, station platforms, the floors of halls and the hard standing around buildings. In smaller scales the same grid serves as wall cladding or as a roof of large sheets.
Polystyrene is joined by solvent cement for plastics, which dissolves both parts and welds them; for joints with metal or resin, cyanoacrylate glue is better. Before painting it is enough to degrease the surface and spray it with a primer, since acrylic holds less well on smooth plastic without an undercoat.
The regularity of the grid is both an advantage and a trap. Sanding a few tiles into a slight dip, scribing cracks or breaking off a corner gives the surface a history; individual squares can be cut out and reset slightly higher, as though a tree root had lifted them. It also helps to vary the depth of the coat between individual panels, because real paving never dries to a single shade. The selling unit is one sheet.
