DARK GREY — an AK interactive weathering pencil

DARK GREY is a dark gray pencil from the modeling range of weathering pencils from AK interactive. The lead is strongly pigmented, semi-waxy and soluble in water — it is drawn dry and can then be blended with a damp brush into a soft shadow or a dirty veil. It is not a paint for spraying and not a kit: it is a modeling aid for weathering, used on a model that has already been built and painted.

Use

• Deepening shadows — drawing a darker gray into seams, corners and under raised parts.
• Outlining panel lines and engraved seams where you want to bring the engraving out by hand and precisely.
• Dirt and deposits in corners, around rivets, in channels and folds.
• Dark scratches and scuffs on light-colored vehicles.
• It is applied to a matte surface; blending with water gives a soft transition instead of a hard line.

Why gray and not black

On light-colored subjects — a white winter camouflage, light gray aircraft and ships, sand-colored desert finishes — pure black looks too hard. It creates a sharp, drawn outline that immediately gives away that this is a model. A dark gray gives the same effect of depth but stays believable: the lines and shadows separate from the base without a black hole jumping out of the model. That is why DARK GREY is often a better choice than a black pencil wherever the base color is light.

Who it is for

For modelers who want fine, deliberate effects without mixing paints and without a palette. The pencil draws precisely and under control, so shadows and lines appear exactly where you want them — and if the drawing does not come out right, as long as it is not sealed it can be blended away with water. It is the easiest way into weathering for beginners and at the same time a useful tool for advanced builders on details where a brush is needlessly coarse.

Keep out of the reach of children. Do not inhale the dust from the pencil lead when sharpening it.
