Small turfs – late autumn are finished grassy pieces in the brown tone of dead grass at the end of the season. In a diorama they are simply laid down and glued.

A finished painted turf from the Czech manufacturer Model Scene, that is a grassy surface ready to be planted into a scene straight away. It is not a loose static grass and you need no equipment to apply it — the turf just has to be glued down. The small format comes into its own for filling a diorama in spot by spot: along walls and fences, around stones and stumps, in ditches, on road shoulders and in places where a continuous lawn would not fit.
Late autumn is the darkest and most muted of the autumn shades: brown and gray-brown tones of dead grass beaten down by rain predominate and green practically disappears. It corresponds roughly to November, that is the time of bare trees, muddy tracks and low dull light. For a modeler it is the most rewarding season, because bare vegetation lets vehicles and structures stand out and it takes a great deal of work with mud, wet effects and pigments. It also works well as a base for a winter scene with the last remnants of snow.
Coat the cleaned base with a thin layer of PVA glue, press the turf down and leave it weighted until dry. Thin the edges out, never leave a straight edge, and cover the transition with soil, mud or fallen leaves. You will bring out the effect of beaten-down grass by pressing part of the growth with a flat tool toward the same side. A richer brown wash applied from the roots upward adds a sense of damp; let it dry thoroughly before you add pigments to the scene.
The turfs are supplied finished and painted. The glue, the base and any further scenery materials are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
