The range serves to create an earthy texture on a surface, that is an uneven, finely granular surface such as dried soil, a dusty track or a deposit on a vehicle's running gear has. The orange tone refers to clay soils with a high content of iron oxides, which occur from the south of Europe through Africa to southeast Asia.
The basis is to work in layers and let each layer mature before the next one comes; a heavy one-off coat tends to crack. It is applied with a brush, a spatula or a piece of sponge, and each tool gives a different texture, so it is worth alternating them even on one model. On running gear the rule is that soil clings from the bottom upward and thins out with distance from the ground; a sharply bounded deposit looks unnatural. In color the product gains a great deal from further toning: lighter dry dust on the raised grain, a darker tone into the recesses. Orange earth goes well with brown and gray shades, while a saturated orange tone on its own suits particular regions rather than serving as universal soil.
