A set of tools for carving rock patterns into plaster. It holds a tool for layers, a cutting point with a chisel edge and a brush for clearing the debris away.
Responsibility details are not available.
Cutting a convincing rock into setting plaster looks simple until one tries it with an ordinary spatula. The result tends to be a tangle of lines without direction, because real rock has layers, sharp breaks and fine grooves left by weathering, and each of those shapes arises from a different movement. The set therefore brings together tools that divide these three tasks.
The tool for working with layers serves to rough out large areas quickly: it suggests the bedding of layers, a face after blasting and weathered outcroppings, that is the shape of the whole. The cutting part with a chisel edge takes out notches and hollows, while the point then draws narrow grooves, abrasions and fine bands left by erosion. The last part is a brush, with which the stone debris is removed from the area being worked, so that what is finished can be seen.
The best moment is shortly after it has firmed up, when the compound holds its shape but has not yet reached its final hardness. At that point the material can be taken away layer by layer and a fresh cut stays sharp. Plaster with a longer working time suits this, because with it there is time left for the whole procedure from the rough shape to the fine pattern.
The proven order is from large to small: first the direction and the dip of the layers, then the cracks and broken-off blocks, and the small pattern at the end. The reverse order mostly ends with the fine details being wiped away during the roughing. Between the steps an area dusted off with the brush is easier to judge, because dust otherwise covers exactly those edges by which the next cut is decided.
The same tools can be used to suggest broken paving, the ruts in a dirt road or the bare slope of a cutting. It is always the same thing: to take material away so that the direction in which it cracks in nature stays legible.
