About product

US Medium Tank M4 Composite Sherman, late version Cognac 1:35 — kit from Asuka

This injection-molded plastic kit in 1:35 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Asuka (formerly known as Tasca) captures the late M4 Sherman with the composite hull. Among modelers the Asuka brand has the reputation of making the most accurate Shermans on the market — fine engraving, precise shapes and a well thought-out build are its long-standing calling card. The boxing carries the name Cognac, which is the name of a particular tank: an M4 Composite named this way fought in the summer of 1944 with the 706th Tank Battalion on Guam. American crews commonly gave their Shermans names of their own and this machine is among the documented ones.

The real subject

The composite hull (sometimes called hybrid) is a production compromise: the front section of the hull is one large casting, the rest of the hull is welded from rolled plate. A cast nose could be made faster and without the laborious welding of the front assembly, but casting the whole hull was beyond the foundries. The combination of the two was the solution that kept the production rate up. On the model it shows at once: the front section has a soft, rounded, smoothly flowing shape, while the rest of the hull is angular and sharply broken. It is precisely this difference that is the reason the composite Sherman exists as a kit of its own — and why you will not confuse it with an ordinary welded M4 or with the all-cast M4A1. Composite M4s served, among other places, in the Pacific, where American units used them against Japanese fortifications.

Building and painting tips

Deal with and paint the running gear, the wheels and the tracks before you close up the hull — afterwards you will not get to them. Take care over the transition between the cast nose and the welded rear: the cast surface should have a slightly rougher, orange-peel texture (it can be stippled with thin filler, or the surface can be etched with thinner), while the welded plates stay smooth. Painting: a primer, olive drab through the airbrush, then lightened panels, a wash into the recesses, chipping on the edges and finally dust and mud pigments on the underside and the tracks.

Who the model is for

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

  • Sherman collectors who want an accurate and less usual hull variant
  • Modelers of the Pacific theater and of the Western Front
  • Fans of the Asuka brand and its emphasis on dimensional accuracy
  • More experienced modelers — the fine parts reward patience

FAQ

It is a hybrid hull: the front section is one large casting and the rest of the hull is welded from plate. It came about as a production compromise — a cast nose could be made faster, but casting the whole hull was beyond what the foundries could do. On the model you recognize a composite hull by the rounded nose running into an angular remainder.

The name of a particular tank. An M4 Composite named Cognac fought in the summer of 1944 with the 706th Tank Battalion on Guam. American crews commonly gave their Shermans names.

The ordinary M4 has an entirely welded hull and the M4A1 an entirely cast one. The composite M4 combines the two — a cast nose and a welded rear. It is a clear distinguishing mark and the main reason this kit exists.

Yes, it is a Japanese manufacturer that formerly traded under the Tasca name. Among modelers it has the reputation of a maker of exceptionally accurate Shermans.
