About product

CH-54A Tarhe — wipers, 1:35 (Quickboost / Aires)

A resin detail set for a model of the heavy crane helicopter Sikorsky CH-54A Tarhe in 1:35 scale. It is not a kit — you do not get a fuselage, a rotor or decals, but the windshield wipers, which replace the parts from the base kit. Intended for ICM kits.

Why wipers of all things

It sounds like an absurdly small component, but it is precisely here that conviction is decided. A wiper has to be thin, long and flat — and that is exactly what injection-molded plastic cannot do: the part comes out of the mold thick and softly shaped, or it is not in the kit at all. Yet it sits right on the glass, which is where the viewer looks first. Resin can manage a crisp thin profile, so you gain an effect that shows across a whole display case. On the Tarhe it is extreme: the cabin is glazed almost entirely and the area of the windshields is enormous — any coarse wiper there hits the eye.

The real subject

The Sikorsky CH-54A Tarhe, nicknamed the Skycrane, is an American heavy crane helicopter with an utterly unusual design: in place of a conventional fuselage it has only a load-bearing spine, beneath which a load or a detachable cabin is slung (under it a command post, a workshop or a field hospital could be set up). In Vietnam it made its name above all for recovering shot-down and crashed aircraft and helicopters, which it could carry back to base. Hence its enormous, rearward-extended glazing — the crew has to see down onto the load.

Usage tips

Cement for plastic models (polystyrene cement) does not work on resin — the joint holds only with super glue (cyanoacrylate) or epoxy. First wash the parts in water with detergent so the mold release agent is removed and the paint has something to hold on to. Cut them off the casting block; do not break them — thin wipers snap. Do any sanding under water; dry resin dust is harmful to health. And above all: fit the wipers only after the painting is finished, at the very end of the build.

Who the set is for

  • builders of the ICM CH-54A Tarhe
  • modelers bothered by a thick plastic wiper on large glazing
  • fans of American helicopters and of Vietnam
  • more experienced modelers working with resin

This is a detail accessory, not a model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is a detail set — the windshield wipers alone. The CH-54A Tarhe kit from ICM has to be bought separately.

On the Tarhe especially. The cabin is glazed almost entirely, so the wipers lie at the center of attention. A plastic part tends to be thick and soft-edged; a resin one has a realistically thin profile.

Super glue (cyanoacrylate) or epoxy. Cement for plastic models does not dissolve resin, so the joint would not hold.

Cut the parts off the casting block (thin wipers break easily), wash them free of mold release agent before painting and sand only wet — resin dust is harmful to health.
