Three finished model trees from the German maker HEKI, fourteen centimeters tall, shaped as forest species. A tree grown in a forest differs substantially from a solitary one: it has a long bare trunk and a high-set crown, because trees in a closed canopy take the light from each other and the lower branches die off. On a model that difference is clearly visible and is used precisely where it should show that this is a forest rather than open country.
The trees are pushed into a pre-drilled hole or glued by the foot of the trunk. In a forest set them close together, as touching crowns are natural. Leave the ground beneath them almost bare, with nothing but leaf granulate and a few twigs.
