What the foliage is for

Foliage in granulate form is the raw material from which low growth arises on a diorama. In itself it represents nothing; only once it is sprinkled into glue does it form a broken mass with an irregular edge, of the kind moss, lichen or self-seeded growth on a stone has. The shades of gray and green aim at growth in shade and in damp, that is at the north side of a wall, the foot of a trunk, cracks in rock and the edge of a stream. The package holds 30 grams.

Where the gray-green tone fits

It comes into its own anywhere pure green would look improbable: on the top of a stone wall, on old roofing, on beams and boards, on a heap of rubble and on neglected ground at the foot of a building. Two tones side by side also allow growth to be built up in layers. First a darker base is applied and only then is the paler shade sprinkled on in places where the sun would fall. An evenly sprinkled area of one color gives artificial work away at first glance.

How to work with the foliage

Coat the area with thinned PVA glue and sprinkle the granulate from above through a sieve or between your fingers, so that it lands unevenly and in places lets the surface show through. Let it dry thoroughly, and only then tilt the diorama over paper and tap the excess out; the granulate collected can be used again. Fine grains scatter across a table easily, so work over a mat. If the growth is to survive handling of the model as well, go over it once dry with very thin glue from a spray bottle.
