1:16 Human skull

What it is

A human skull in 1:16 scale as a separate accessory for a scene. It is not a kit and not a figure, but a single small object that fills out the surroundings of the main model. In the chosen scale the skull measures roughly a centimeter, so the result is decided by painting rather than by assembly.

Where it fits

On a base under a bust, in a display case beside a figure, or in a diorama where the scene is to come out somber. A skull is a rewarding narrative element: lying in the grass at a figure's feet, on a little heap of earth or on the top of a table, it gives the view a second plane and stops a viewer at a detail. It will also serve where an empty place has been left in the foreground and the scene lacks a small thing to fill it.

Building and painting tips

First check what material the part is made of. Plastic cement has no effect on anything other than polystyrene, and only super glue will hold the joint. Cut excess material off with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the remainder down carefully. Before painting, wash and degrease the surface, or the paint will hold badly. A light bone base works well, with a darker glaze over it that runs into the eye sockets, the nasal opening and the cranial sutures, and finally a dry brush on the raised edges. If the skull is to lie in earth, add a coat of pigment along the underside in the same shade as the base of the scene. The part will then merge with the ground and will not look stuck on.

For builders of figures and dioramas in larger scales who are finishing a scene and are looking for a small prop. Paints, glue, a base and a figure are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
