About product

BAe Sea Harrier FRS.1 in 1:144 scale from Academy

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British carrier-based Sea Harrier FRS.1 in 1:144 scale from the South Korean manufacturer Academy. The model is in a small scale, so it also suits a smaller shelf or a collection of carrier aircraft. The box contains injection-molded plastic parts including the clear parts of the canopy and decals for machines of the Fleet Air Arm from the period of the Falklands conflict. Glue and paints are not included.

The real subject

The Sea Harrier FRS.1 was the naval version of the famous Harrier – a single-seat fighter, reconnaissance and strike aircraft with vertical or short takeoff and vertical landing (V/STOL). It was powered by a Rolls-Royce Pegasus engine with vectoring nozzles, which made it possible to take off from the short decks of light aircraft carriers fitted with a ski jump. Unlike the land-based Harrier it was given a raised cockpit with a better view and a radar in a reworked nose. It was the Royal Navy Sea Harriers that in 1982 carried the main weight of the air fighting over the South Atlantic, where they operated from carriers and in the fighter role relied on short-range missiles.

Building and painting tips

A small scale means small parts – a sharp knife, a fine file and thin cement for plastic that wicks into the seam all pay off. Mask and paint the canopy separately. Apply a gloss clear coat before the decals so that no silvered edges appear, and give the model a matte coat once it has dried. The typical naval finish is a single-color gray, so the result is decided by the cleanliness of the spraying, subtle shading of the panels and discreet weathering – heavy washes would look coarse in this scale.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of modern jets in 1:144 scale
  • For anyone interested in the history of the Falklands War and Royal Navy aviation
  • For modelers who want a quicker project without building a large kit
  • For builders of dioramas with a carrier deck in a small scale

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It was given a raised cockpit with a better view, a reworked nose with a radar and modifications for operating in a maritime environment. It was a naval fighter, not primarily a ground-attack aircraft.

The model has fewer parts than larger scales, but the parts are small. For a patient beginner it is a manageable project; a sharp tool and thin cement help.

No. It is a classic injection-molded plastic kit. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

A single-color naval gray finish is characteristic of Royal Navy carrier machines. It is exactly the clean spraying and the fine weathering that decide the final impression.
