1:72 anniversary artwork for a Belgian F-16. The markings were created for the thirtieth jubilee of the unit that every pilot passed through before joining a combat squadron.

Before a Belgian pilot joined a combat squadron, he had to pass through the unit that converted him to the type. Such units are not usually in the center of attention, yet every airman passes through them and their machines accumulate more hours than most of the others. Two-seat and single-seat airframes take turns on the training line and the care they need never stops.
A round anniversary tends to be the only moment when such a unit gets a chance to show itself. One of its machines is then sprayed or given a commemorative piece of artwork, usually across the surface of the rudder, supplemented by lettering with the dates. The aircraft then flies ordinary tasks for the whole season and carries the special badge with it, which for a modeler is an ideal combination of everyday operational wear and a striking detail.
The set of markings aims at exactly this case. The commemorative artwork for the thirtieth anniversary goes on one large area, so check in advance how exactly it follows the shape of the leading-edge fillet of the fin on your kit. Differences between molds tend to be noticeable in this spot, and it is easier to shift a decal than to add a missing corner.
It pays to build in the order of varnish, decal, decal softener and only then a unifying overspray. Dirt and exhaust staining then look natural even over the commemorative artwork.
